At one of my mom’s cousins’ farms there were empty wooden cable spools—industrial ones, taller than me, the center barrel about chest high. To a kid, that is not surplus. That is rolling stock.

The farm sat on a slight hill, and I was rolling one around the yard, which went fine right up until the hill got involved. The spool gathered speed, departed from my program entirely, and set course for the gravel road.

So I did the brave thing, which was also the stupid thing, which at that age were usually the same thing: I ran around in front of it and wrapped my arms around the barrel.

What happened next was my formal introduction to angular momentum. The spool did not stop. The spool incorporated me. It flipped me up, around, and over the top—a kid suddenly orbiting his own cargo—and only then, with my full mass committed to the project, did it grind to a stop short of the road.

Mission technically accomplished. Lesson permanently installed.

Lesson logged: Some things are better left to their own path, and standing in front of one is rarely the best idea. If you must intervene, understand that the thing you set rolling does not recognize your authority—it recognizes physics. Plan accordingly.
