Pattern Recognition Before Literacy

Before I ever started school, I could write cursive.

I should clarify: I could not read. I did not know the alphabet. But my Grandma wrote in cursive, and I could see the shapes—the loops, the slants, where the line climbed and where it dove—and I could put them on paper well enough that she’d have me do it. I was producing fluent script with no idea what any of it said. The pattern came years before the meaning.

I’ve since learned there’s a word for systems that do that. Several words, actually. Some of them are billion-dollar companies now.

The other literary milestone happened at my favorite aunt’s house, where I encountered my first Dr. Seuss book. People remember Seuss for the rhymes. I remember the machines. Every page was an engineering diagram drawn by someone who had clearly never been told no—impossible contraptions rendered with complete structural confidence, every tube and funnel accounted for. Nobody in those books ever asked whether the machine should exist. They just built it and dealt with the consequences, which, as field reports go, I found deeply relatable.

Lesson logged: The pattern can come before the understanding—that’s not cheating, that’s how learning actually starts. You copy the loops until one day you know what they say.
