The Notebook Animation Lab

My fun grandma kept little notebooks everywhere. Always within reach, always with blank corners.

The corners were mine. I’d draw a little figure on one page, then the next page, then the next—each one shifted just slightly—and then flip through and watch the thing move. A stick man walking. A ball bouncing. Motion, manufactured by a kid with a pencil at a kitchen table.

Here’s what got me, even then: the motion wasn’t on any page. You could examine every drawing individually and find nothing but a slightly different stick man, standing still. The walk only existed in the sequence. Take out a page and he’d stumble. Reorder them and he’d glitch. The thing I’d actually made wasn’t a drawing—it was the relationship between drawings.

Grandma never minded the corners. I suspect she flipped them herself when I wasn’t around.

Lesson logged: The artifact isn’t the frame, it’s the pipeline. Any single state looks static—the life is in how one state becomes the next, in order, with nothing missing.
